may you be the victors in your battle and come to know wholeness once more. Karen, 19th February 2002 |
Welcome to my secret world... You may not know what SI is but you probably know someone who does it... SI, or Self-Injury is something that causes great pain to many people, especially young women. It's an expression of soulpain that can't be recognised or dealt with in more conventional ways, a release for emotion which would otherwise be overpowering, and a vicious trap.Who am I?You might think that you know who I am
but let me tell you this -
you are WRONGI am not just a fifteen year-old
huddling alone in her room at night
silently punishing herself
for imagined sins...I could be...
But I am much more than that. There is no bell hanging around my neck
marking me forth as a Leper for today.
I have wounds indeed... but they are carefully concealed
kept hidden from all, even those closest to me
Because I know that if they noticed, if they saw,
if they really KNEW
then no Leper would be as isolated as me...That can NOT happen
and so I hide myself behind a mask of 'normal'
carefully concealing any sign
that I am in pain.
Sometimes I might slip
and you will catch a glimpse
of the me under the mask
but you will never know for sure
whether you saw me or not.I could be anyone, anywhere, anytime.
I am your postman
your teacher
your laywer
your doctor...I am your neighbour
your partner
your daughter
your friend...If the circumstances were right
I could even be you...Anybody can be hurt,
and invisible wounds are the most painful of all.I know.
I've been there.
And I've got the scars to show it.
This site is based on my own experiences with Self-Injury... some of you may find the contents disturbing, but I hope you'll bear with me. You may also find it helpful... at least I'd hope that's the case.
NEWSFLASH! This site has reached ten thousand visitors in less than two years! I am astounded at the numbers, and humbled at the thought that I can have touched that many lives. I hope that this site is providing a valuable service for you all, or at least being of some help. Together we are strong.
